Why You need to Add Vitamin C to Your Skincare Routine

Are you looking to update your skin care regimen? You may have heard that vitamin C serum benefits skin in a significant way. We’re going to walk you through all the reasons why you should incorporate this fantastic ingredient in your skincare routine, talk about the different types of vitamin C, and give you some insider tips on what to look for when purchasing.

What is Vitamin C?

Before diving into how vitamin C benefits skin, it’s helpful to understand what it is.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that occurs naturally in the skin. It produces collagen, the protein that promotes skin elasticity and neutralizes free radicals, which produce undesirable things like aging, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. It’s also essential for our bones, teeth, and small blood vessels.

Our body can’t store or synthesize vitamin C, so it’s important to consume it regularly to enjoy its effects. And when it comes to our skin, it’s difficult to know if vitamin C from our diet is actually used there. The best way to ensure this antioxidant’s delivery to the skin is by using serums specially formulated with this ingredient.

Vitamin C Forms

Vitamin C serum comes in different forms, including:

  • L-ascorbic acid

  • Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or sodium ascorbyl phosphate

  • Ascorbyl Palmitate

  • Other derivatives such as tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate

Antioxidants are unstable ingredients that break down when exposed to light and air, and vitamin C is no exception. Manufacturers use different forms of this antioxidant to try and increase its shelf life.

All of the forms on the market have been tested and proven to be effective, and the one you choose will depend mostly on your skin type. Vitamin C works well on all skin types, but different problem-types may do better with certain derivatives.

If you have normal or oily skin, common L-ascorbic acid should work just fine for you. Those with sensitive or dry skin, however, should avoid serums with L-ascorbic acid and instead choose one with magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. Ascorbic acid, while it has the most supporting research, can irritate the skin at higher concentrations.

What are the Benefits of a Vitamin C Serum for Skin?

  • Hydrating
  • Brightens your skin
  • Reduces redness
  • Smoothes wrinkles
  • Boosts collagen production
  • Heals burns and cuts

Aside from helping protect against free radicals, there are many vitamin C benefits for skin that have caused this ingredient to rise to popularity.

Vitamin C serums have excellent anti-aging benefits. Low collagen leads to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and vitamin C is known to boost collagen production. In fact, using it as part of your skincare regimen one of the most effective ways to get rid of wrinkles. Stimulating collagen production also helps maintain tight, firm skin by preventing sagging.

Not only does it have significant anti-aging benefits, but vitamin C can also help potentiate your skin’s defense against UV exposure by making your sunscreen more effective and repairing sun damage. And vitamin C protects against things like pollution because it creates a sort of barrier that doesn’t allow the damaging effects to penetrate your skin.

And if all that wasn’t impressive enough, this antioxidant is also known to even skin tone, brighten the complexion, and give skin much-needed hydration.

Can Everyone Reap the Benefits of Vitamin C Serum?

Yes! Vitamin C serum has a high safety profile, meaning that most people will be able to take advantage of the benefits of vitamin C on skin. You can use it daily for long periods.

While adverse effects are rare, they do happen. We recommend doing a patch test on an inconspicuous area before applying a full treatment to your face.

How to Incorporate Vitamin C for Skin Benefits

Now that you know the benefits of vitamin C for skin, let’s talk about how to use it and the different forms.

As we mentioned, it’s safe to use regularly. You can apply it both daily and nightly as part of your skincare routine. Apply the serum after your cleanser, toner, and exfoliator and before moisturizing.

You can also pair vitamin C with anti-aging treatments like sunscreen and other antioxidants. A word of caution, however: applying it in conjunction with niacinamide, or vitamin B3, may render the vitamin C less effective.

What to Know When Buying Vitamin C Serum

Not all vitamin C serums are created equal. To truly see vitamin C skin benefits, there are a few things you should look for when purchasing a serum.

As we mentioned, vitamin C is an unstable ingredient. Proper packaging is essential to get a usable form of vitamin C, so look for serums that come in opaque tubes, air restrictive bottles, or pump delivery systems, like the one our Hibiscus Infused Vitamin C Serum uses. Be sure to avoid jars.

You’ll also want to take a good look at the serum before purchasing it. If the product has darkened or otherwise changed color, that means the vitamin C has oxidized and lost its benefits. Remember to check the use-by date, too; expired products are less effective.

And for maximum vitamin C serum benefits for your face, choose a water-based formula instead of an oil-based one. Water-based formulas penetrate the skin more thoroughly and are more effective. They’re also generally lighter, which makes them easier to incorporate into your skincare routine.

Final Thoughts on Vitamin C Serum Benefits

  • I just want to say that I like your skin care line and in particular Vitamin C serum. As an older woman I am selective about my skin care which I keep simple. I keep vitamin c in the mix because it works and does not irritate.
